![]() ![]() ![]() Pleasanton, CA—The City of Pleasanton’s Paratransit Service (PPS) has a special gift for seniors in the new year. A new pilot service known as the “PPS Downtown Route” launches on Monday, January 14, 2008, featuring same-day fixed route transit service on the popular Pleasanton Paratransit buses. Operating throughout downtown Pleasanton, the service will connect senior housing complexes to the Main Street area, anchored by the Safeway and Raleys shopping centers. The new Downtown Route mini-bus is available to all registered Pleasanton Paratransit Service riders at one half the cost of a typical PPS ride, or $1.25 for service all day throughout downtown Pleasanton. The new service does not include Stoneridge Mall or Wal-Mart, but does feature a stop at the First and Neal Streets transfer point for WHEELS, where passengers ages 65-plus can travel free between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. each Monday through Friday. “The purpose of the Downtown Route is to provide seniors with another transportation alternative that does not require an advance reservation for a spontaneous trip downtown or to the grocery store,” according to Pam Deaton, Pleasanton Senior Center supervisor. “The reduced price is an additional enhancement for seniors, and, because a fixed route is more fiscally efficient, we are able to pass that savings on to the rider,” adds Deaton. The service is available to any registered Pleasanton Paratransit Service rider and is best suited for those with minimal mobility limitations. The new PPS route includes seven scheduled runs per day, along two routes which operate on alternate days of the week (schedules are attached). The hours of service are Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with stops at the following senior housing complexes: •Ridge View Commons •Kottinger Place •Deer Ridge Apartments •Stanley Junction •Gardens at Ironwood •Vineyard and Hacienda Mobile Home Parks •Pleasanton Gardens Paratransit Route A Schedule Paratransit Route A Map Paratransit Route B Schedule Paratransit Route B Map The regular PPS is a Monday to Saturday, door-to-door shared ride transportation program for Pleasanton and Sunol residents 60 years of age, or older, and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) eligible residents. PPS provides rides to any location within Pleasanton city limits and adjacent unincorporated areas, with some medical destinations in surrounding cities. Advance reservations are required for this program and fees are charged for each one-way ride. I will continue to forward this every time it comes around! STROKE: Remember The 1st Three Letters.... S.T.R. My nurse friend sent this and encouraged me to post it and spread the word. I agree. If everyone can remember something this simple, we could save some folks. Seriously.. Please read: STROKE IDENTIFICATION: During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) .....she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening. Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 pm Ingrid passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. Some don't die.... they end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead. It only takes a minute to read this... A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke... totally . He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough. RECOGNIZING A STROKE Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR . Read and Learn! Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke . Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions: S * Ask the individual to SMILE. T * Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently, (i.e. Is it sunny out today?) R * Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS. If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 999/911 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue NOTE: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue.. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other , that is also an indication of a stroke.
